Creative Kits & Art Materials Safety

Last Updated: September 9, 2026
Welcome to ReneeOwens.com.
This Creative Kits & Art Materials Safety Policy provides important information about the art, sewing, embroidery, drawing, painting, and craft materials that may be sold, reviewed, demonstrated, contributed, or distributed through ReneeOwens.com and The Mermaid’s Satchel Project.
Creativity should be joyful, curious, and wonderfully playful—but creative materials are still tools. Some may contain sharp points, small parts, pigments, adhesives, magnets, natural fibers, synthetic materials, or substances requiring careful handling.
Please read all product descriptions, package labels, manufacturer instructions, and safety warnings before beginning a project.
Adult Creative Materials
Unless a specific product is expressly identified and labeled otherwise, creative kits and materials offered through ReneeOwens.com are intended for adult artists and makers age 18 or older.
They are not designed, tested, certified, or marketed as children’s toys.
A product’s bright colors, small size, decorative appearance, or beginner-friendly instructions should not be interpreted as meaning that it is suitable for children.
Children & Adult Supervision
Children and teenagers should use creative materials only with the permission and direct supervision of a responsible adult who understands the contents of the kit and the abilities of the individual artist.
Some kits may contain:
- Needles, pins, scissors, blades, awls, or other sharp tools
- Small parts that may present choking hazards
- Magnets that may cause serious injury if swallowed
- Paints, inks, pigments, mediums, adhesives, or other chemical products
- Natural or synthetic fibers that may irritate sensitive individuals
- Plastic bags, cords, ribbons, threads, or other materials requiring supervision
Creative materials must be kept away from babies, toddlers, unsupervised children, and anyone likely to place nonfood objects in their mouth.
If a future product is specifically intended for children, its listing and packaging will provide separate age recommendations and required safety information.
Not Food, Cosmetics, or Body Products
Unless a manufacturer expressly labels a product for a particular additional use, art and craft materials are intended only for their stated creative purpose.
Do not eat, drink, taste, inhale, or intentionally ingest art materials.
Do not use ordinary art paints, pigments, inks, dyes, adhesives, markers, crayons, or other craft supplies:
- As food coloring or cake decoration
- On dishes, utensils, cups, cutting boards, or food-contact surfaces
- As cosmetics, face paint, body paint, nail products, or tattoo ink
- Inside the mouth or around the eyes
- On pets, plants, or other living things
- For any medical or therapeutic purpose
A product described as “nontoxic” is not necessarily edible, cosmetic-grade, food-safe, appropriate for skin contact, or harmless when misused.
Manufacturer Labels & Instructions
Manufacturer labels, warnings, certifications, instructions, Safety Data Sheets, and intended-use limitations take priority over general information provided on this website.
Do not remove or disregard:
- Age recommendations
- Choking-hazard warnings
- Health or chronic-hazard warnings
- Ventilation instructions
- Protective-equipment recommendations
- First-aid instructions
- Storage and disposal directions
- “AP,” “CL,” ASTM D-4236, or other safety and labeling information
If a label is damaged, missing, illegible, or inconsistent with the product, discontinue use until reliable information can be obtained from the manufacturer or supplier.
Repackaged Samples & Divided Materials
Some creative kits or Mermaid’s Satchels may contain manufacturer products that have been divided into smaller quantities, such as watercolor samples, dot cards, paint pans, paper samples, thread lengths, fabric pieces, pencils, or other useful materials.
When practical, identifying information and applicable safety warnings will be preserved or provided with the divided material. However, small samples may not reproduce every element of the manufacturer’s original packaging.
Recipients should retain all labels and accompanying information until the materials have been completely used or safely discarded.
A divided or repackaged sample does not become a product manufactured by Renee Owens. Original trademarks, formulations, and product rights remain with their respective manufacturers.
Do not use an unidentified sample if its identity, intended use, or safe handling requirements cannot be reasonably determined.
Contributed & Gently Handled Supplies
The Mermaid’s Satchel Project may use appropriate contributed, surplus, sampled, divided, gently handled, or previously opened creative materials.
Reasonable efforts will be made to inspect contributed supplies before redistribution. Materials that appear leaking, contaminated, moldy, infested, recalled, deteriorated, improperly stored, or otherwise unsafe will not knowingly be distributed.
However, I may not know the complete manufacturing, purchase, storage, or handling history of every contributed item.
Recipients should inspect every item before use and should not use anything that:
- Has an unusual or rancid odor
- Shows signs of mold, infestation, corrosion, or contamination
- Is leaking, swollen, cracked, or damaged
- Has missing or unreadable safety information
- Appears materially different from the expected product
- Has been recalled or is prohibited from use
Questions about contributing supplies are addressed in the Support & Contributions Disclosure.
Paints, Pigments, Inks & Mediums
Paints, pigments, inks, dyes, watercolor mediums, acrylic mediums, solvents, fixatives, varnishes, and similar products may require ventilation, protective equipment, restricted application methods, or special disposal.
Always follow the manufacturer’s directions. Depending upon the product, responsible precautions may include:
- Working in a well-ventilated area
- Avoiding inhalation of dust, mist, vapor, or spray
- Wearing suitable gloves, eye protection, or protective clothing
- Avoiding skin and eye contact
- Keeping containers securely closed when not in use
- Washing hands thoroughly after use
- Keeping food and beverages away from the work area
Never point-load, lick, or shape a paintbrush with your mouth.
Dry Pigments, Powders & Dust
Dry pigments, graphite, charcoal, pastel dust, mica, powdered mediums, sanding dust, and other fine particles may become airborne.
Do not intentionally inhale powders or blow loose material from a work surface. Use ventilation and appropriate protective equipment according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Clean powder with a method appropriate for the material. Sweeping, blowing, or using an unsuitable household vacuum may spread fine particles through the air.
Individuals with asthma, allergies, respiratory conditions, chemical sensitivities, or other health concerns should consult an appropriate professional before using unfamiliar materials.
Adhesives, Solvents & Aerosols
Glues, adhesives, sealants, solvents, varnishes, fixatives, aerosol sprays, and similar materials may produce fumes, irritate skin or eyes, or present fire hazards.
Use these materials only with the ventilation, protective equipment, temperature controls, and ignition precautions stated by the manufacturer.
Never use flammable materials near candles, cigarettes, pilot lights, heaters, sparks, hot tools, or other ignition sources.
Do not combine chemicals or art materials unless the manufacturer specifically states that they are compatible.
Sharp Tools
Sewing and embroidery kits may contain needles, pins, seam rippers, awls, scissors, blades, wire, or other sharp components.
Sharp tools should be:
- Counted before and after use
- Stored in a needle case, pincushion, sheath, or secure container
- Used on a stable and well-lit work surface
- Kept away from children and pets
- Discarded in a rigid, puncture-resistant container when damaged
Never place needles or pins in your mouth, clothing, furniture, bedding, carpet, or other locations where they may be forgotten or stepped upon.
Magnets
Some satchels, frames, closures, display pieces, or creative kits may contain magnets.
Swallowed magnets can cause severe internal injury or death. Keep all magnets away from babies, children, pets, and individuals who may place objects in their mouths.
If a magnet becomes loose, cracked, broken, or detached, stop using the item and secure the magnet immediately.
Magnets may also interfere with pacemakers, implanted medical devices, electronics, magnetic storage, and other sensitive equipment. Follow the instructions provided by the applicable medical-device or equipment manufacturer.
If magnet ingestion is known or suspected, seek emergency medical assistance immediately.
Small Parts, Cords & Plastic Packaging
Buttons, beads, clips, brush caps, pencil pieces, miniature canvases, frames, charms, findings, fasteners, and other small components may present choking hazards.
Threads, yarns, ribbons, cords, straps, and handles may create entanglement or strangulation hazards if misused.
Plastic bags, shrink wrap, and other packaging should be kept away from babies, children, and pets and disposed of responsibly.
Natural Fibers, Animal Hair & Latex
Creative kits may include cotton, linen, wool, silk, wood, leather, feathers, natural-hair brushes, rubber, latex, plant-based materials, or other naturally derived components.
They may also contain polyester, nylon, acrylic, synthetic brush fibers, plastic, resin, metal alloys, or blended materials.
Natural does not automatically mean allergy-free or irritation-free. Materials may also come into contact with substances used during manufacturing, dyeing, finishing, packaging, storage, or shipping.
If you have known allergies or sensitivities, review available product information before use and avoid any material whose composition cannot be safely confirmed.
Skin Contact & Sensitivities
Some people may experience irritation or allergic reactions to pigments, dyes, metals, adhesives, preservatives, fragrances, natural fibers, synthetic fibers, latex, resins, or other substances.
Use protective barriers where appropriate and wash exposed skin after handling materials.
Discontinue use if you experience redness, swelling, itching, breathing difficulty, dizziness, pain, or another unexpected reaction. Seek appropriate medical assistance when symptoms are serious or persistent.
Do not deliberately perform a skin-patch test with a product that is not intended for skin application.
Workspaces, Clothing & Surfaces
Protect clothing, furniture, floors, tables, and surrounding surfaces before beginning a project.
Paints, inks, dyes, charcoal, graphite, adhesives, pigments, and other materials may permanently stain or damage surfaces.
Use a dedicated creative workspace whenever possible. Do not prepare food in an area contaminated by art materials, and do not use art containers for food or beverages.
Wash hands and clean the workspace after completing a project.
Pets
Keep creative supplies, threads, ribbons, needles, pigments, paints, adhesives, magnets, and packaging away from cats, dogs, birds, and other animals.
Items that appear harmless to humans may be dangerous if chewed, swallowed, inhaled, or absorbed by a pet.
If you believe an animal has ingested or been exposed to a potentially harmful material, contact a veterinarian or animal poison-control professional promptly.
Storage
Store materials in their original or properly labeled containers whenever possible.
Creative materials should generally be kept:
- Securely closed
- In a cool, dry, and appropriately ventilated location
- Away from food, medicine, and personal-care products
- Away from flames, heat, moisture, and direct sunlight
- Out of reach of children and pets
- Separated from incompatible substances
Do not transfer paints, pigments, solvents, or other materials into food or beverage containers.
Disposal
Dispose of art materials, blades, needles, chemical products, contaminated water, solvents, adhesives, batteries, magnets, and packaging according to manufacturer instructions and applicable local requirements.
Do not pour paints, pigments, solvents, varnishes, adhesives, or unknown chemicals into sinks, storm drains, gardens, waterways, or household plumbing unless the manufacturer and local regulations expressly permit it.
Sharp objects should be secured in an appropriate puncture-resistant container before disposal.
Recalls & Safety Notices
Manufacturers and government agencies may occasionally issue product recalls or updated safety information.
If you become aware that an item in a kit has been recalled, stop using it and follow the manufacturer’s or government agency’s instructions.
I may contact known purchasers or recipients when I receive reliable notice of a safety issue affecting a distributed product. Customers and recipients are responsible for keeping their contact information current and reviewing notices associated with products they use.
Damaged, Leaking, or Questionable Materials
Do not use a creative product that arrives leaking, shattered, contaminated, unusually discolored, improperly sealed, or otherwise questionable.
Secure the item away from children and pets, retain its packaging, and submit photographs and relevant details through the Contact page.
Do not mail leaking, hazardous, flammable, or chemically unstable materials unless you have received appropriate shipping instructions and the carrier permits the shipment.
Purchase-related remedies are addressed in the Shipping, Returns & Refunds Policy.
Substitutions in Creative Kits
Because many kits are assembled in small batches, a listed material may occasionally become unavailable.
When appropriate, a reasonably comparable material may be substituted. Material substitutions will not knowingly disregard essential safety warnings, disclosed allergies, or the intended purpose of the project.
Recipients should review every included component rather than assuming that two materials with similar colors or purposes have identical ingredients or safety requirements.
Medical Conditions & Pregnancy
Individuals who are pregnant, nursing, immunocompromised, chemically sensitive, or living with respiratory, neurological, dermatological, or other health conditions should review unfamiliar materials with an appropriate healthcare professional before use.
Information on ReneeOwens.com is not medical, toxicological, occupational-safety, veterinary, or emergency advice.
Emergency Situations
If a person has difficulty breathing, loses consciousness, experiences a severe reaction, suffers a serious cut or puncture, or swallows a dangerous object or substance, contact emergency services immediately.
For suspected poisoning in the United States, contact Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222.
Have the product container, label, ingredient information, and Safety Data Sheet available when possible.
Do not induce vomiting or attempt a home remedy unless instructed by a qualified medical or poison-control professional.
Individual Responsibility
Artists and supervising adults are responsible for selecting materials appropriate for their abilities, health considerations, workspace, equipment, and intended use.
Creative instructions cannot anticipate every combination of materials, medical condition, environment, tool, substitution, or individual technique.
Please stop and seek reliable guidance whenever a material, tool, or process appears unsafe or unclear.
No Waiver of Mandatory Rights
Nothing in this safety policy is intended to excuse the distribution of a defective or unlawfully labeled product, eliminate responsibilities that cannot legally be waived, or limit rights provided by applicable consumer-protection law.
Changes to This Policy
This Creative Kits & Art Materials Safety Policy may be updated as new products, materials, kit formats, safety information, regulations, recalls, or creative programs are introduced.
The most current version will always be available on this page.
Contact
Questions, requests, safety concerns, product incidents, or reports of damaged or recalled materials may be submitted through the Contact page.
Please include the product or kit name, approximate date received, photographs when appropriate, and enough information to identify the material. Do not submit private medical records or unnecessary sensitive information.
Creative work should invite wonder—not unnecessary risk.
Please take your time, protect your workspace, respect your tools, read the labels, and give every material the thoughtful care it deserves.
Collected with wonder. Shared with heart.
