Painting Beyond the Brush
My First Rockwell Oilac Landscape
Exploring color, texture, and palette-knife painting with the June 2026 SketchBox

une’s SketchBox arrived with a medium I had never explored before: Rockwell Oilac paints.
Much of my artistic journey has focused on watercolor, where the paint moves lightly across the paper and the white surface often becomes part of the finished piece. Oilac invited me into a very different experience. It was thicker, more tactile, and far more physical than the painting methods I normally use.
That made it both challenging and exciting.
Discovering Rockwell Oilac
The June SketchBox gave me my first opportunity to experiment with Rockwell Oilac paints and palette-knife painting. I especially enjoyed the rich colors, heavy texture, and freedom to create a landscape through movement and bold marks rather than fine detail.

Inside the June SketchBox
This month’s box included a thoughtfully assembled collection for exploring Oilac and palette-knife painting:
- Five tubes of Rockwell Oilac paint
- Two palette knives
- Reusable acrylic palette
- Premium Strathmore oil paper
- Instructional booklet featuring a colorful landscape project
Oilac occupies an interesting space between acrylic and oil paint. It offers the texture and blending qualities artists enjoy in oils while remaining water-soluble and approachable for someone encountering the medium for the first time.
Coming from watercolor, I immediately noticed the difference. Rather than encouraging the paint to flow, I had to think about how I wanted to place it, move it, and build it across the surface.
Painting Without a Brush

For my project, I focused on creating a dramatic landscape using the palette knives included in the box.
Rather than striving for realism, I embraced texture, movement, and bold color contrasts. Rich purples, deep greens, bright oranges, and creamy yellows came together in an energetic scene that feels almost dreamlike.
The reflective water and layered knife work gave me an opportunity to explore forms of mark-making that felt very different from traditional brush painting. Each movement of the knife left a distinct impression in the paint. Instead of carefully drawing every element, I could suggest shapes and movement through direction, pressure, and color.
There was something wonderfully immediate about it.
Learning Through Texture and Movement
One of my favorite aspects of this month’s box was the way it encouraged experimentation.
The palette knives pushed me outside my comfort zone and reminded me that painting can be as much about texture and physical movement as it is about drawing and detail. I had to loosen my expectations and allow the marks themselves to become part of the landscape.
That freedom was especially valuable because Oilac was completely new to me. I did not need to approach it as though I already knew what I was doing. I could simply explore the paint, see how it responded, and learn from each layer.
The result was bolder and more expressive than the artwork I usually create, but that is precisely what made the experience interesting.
My First Experience with Rockwell Oilac
June’s SketchBox was an enjoyable introduction to Rockwell Oilac paints and palette-knife painting.
The project took me away from the transparency and delicacy of watercolor and into a world of thick paint, vivid contrasts, and visible movement. It gave me permission to stop worrying about realism and concentrate on the physical experience of painting.
I may have begun the project completely unfamiliar with Oilac, but I finished it with a new appreciation for expressive landscapes and the possibilities held within a simple palette knife.
