Sketchbox
A Little Box of Creative Possibilities

ketchBox has become one of my favorite ways to step outside my usual creative habits and try something new.
Each monthly box arrives with a thoughtfully selected collection of art supplies centered around a particular medium, technique, or creative challenge. Sometimes the supplies are familiar. Sometimes they are completely outside my comfort zone.
That is part of what I love about it.
Instead of reaching automatically for the same watercolor palette or favorite brush, I get an excuse to experiment, learn, make mistakes, and occasionally discover a material I never would have purchased for myself.
Why I Enjoy SketchBox
One of the things I appreciate most about SketchBox is that the supplies are selected to work together. Rather than receiving a random assortment of unrelated art materials, each box feels like a small creative project waiting to happen. The supplies usually support a particular medium or technique, and SketchBox School provides additional lessons and demonstrations that help turn those materials into an actual experience. For someone who loves learning new things, that combination is incredibly appealing.
What You May Find Inside
- Artist-quality paints and drawing materials
- Brushes, pens, pencils, and markers
- Specialty papers and surfaces
- Unexpected creative tools
- Projects and SketchBox School inspiration
Every collection is different, which is exactly what keeps opening a new SketchBox interesting.

It Encourages Me to Be a Beginner Again
I’ve spent years working primarily in watercolor, which means it is very easy to stay with the materials and techniques I already understand.
SketchBox regularly interrupts that habit.
Alcohol markers, unfamiliar papers, new brush shapes, unusual paints, illustration tools, specialty pencils, and other materials have all pushed me into situations where I don’t already know exactly what I’m doing. That can be uncomfortable. It can also be wonderful. Every new medium reminds me that growth often happens when we allow ourselves to become beginners again.
SketchBox School
The educational side of SketchBox is one of the reasons the subscription feels more useful to me than simply purchasing a collection of art supplies. SketchBox School provides projects and demonstrations built around the materials included in the box, giving artists somewhere to begin when a new medium feels unfamiliar. I often use those lessons as a starting point and then continue experimenting on my own. The goal isn’t necessarily to reproduce the example perfectly. For me, the fun is discovering what the supplies can do.
What You May See Here
As I work through my SketchBox collections, I share the experience here in my journal.
That may include:
- monthly SketchBox unboxings
- first impressions of unfamiliar supplies
- finished projects
- individual product reviews
- SketchBox School projects
- experiments that go wonderfully
- experiments that absolutely do not
I think both outcomes are worth sharing.
Creative work doesn’t have to be perfect to be useful, interesting, or fun.
Would I Recommend SketchBox?
Yes, especially for artists who enjoy experimenting.
I think SketchBox is particularly well suited to people who:
- enjoy trying new art supplies
- want encouragement to experiment with unfamiliar media
- like guided creative projects
- enjoy receiving a surprise assortment of materials
- want to discover products they might not otherwise try
If you already know exactly which materials you want and have no interest in experimentation, a subscription box may not be the most practical way to shop.
But if part of the joy of art for you is discovery, SketchBox can be a delightful monthly adventure.
