Watercolor Beginners & Beyond
Learning, Encouragement & a Generous Creative Community

atercolors Beginners & Beyond is much more than a place to learn watercolor.
Created and led by artist and teacher Dianne Zimmerman, it has grown into an enormous community of more than 377,000 artists while somehow retaining the warmth, encouragement, and kindness of a much smaller gathering. That is one of the things that makes Dianne’s community so remarkable. Artists at every stage are encouraged to learn, experiment, share their work, ask questions, and keep painting. For me personally, Dianne has also been an extraordinarily gentle, generous, and encouraging teacher. Her influence has profoundly shaped both my artwork and the way I think about creative learning.
A Place Where Beginners Are Welcome
Learning art can be intimidating. It is very easy to look at the work of an experienced artist and forget that every one of us once had to learn how much water belonged on the brush, how colors behaved on paper, and what happened when a painting didn’t turn out the way we imagined. Dianne has created a community where being a beginner is not something to apologize for.
Questions are welcome.
Experiments are encouraged.
Progress is celebrated.
And artists are continually reminded that learning is part of the adventure.
That atmosphere is one of the reasons I have remained connected to Watercolors Beginners & Beyond for years.

Whether you’re picking up a watercolor brush for the first time or simply looking for a little creative encouragement, Dianne has created a wonderful collection of places to learn, paint, share, and grow. Her Patreon also helps support the prizes, supplies, and community art programs that allow her to share that encouragement with others.
Weekly Art Challenges
One of the most enjoyable parts of the Watercolors Beginners & Beyond Facebook community is Dianne’s art challenges. She regularly gives members a creative prompt or project and invites artists to participate. These aren’t competitions. They give thousands of artists a reason to pick up their brushes, try something different, practice their skills, and share what they created with a supportive community. Dianne also selects challenge winners who receive art supplies related to the challenge. It’s another little way she turns learning into something joyful.
Lessons, Tutorials & Classes
Dianne teaches through several different parts of the Watercolors Beginners & Beyond community. Artists can find free projects, challenges, tutorials, and educational resources through her website and Facebook community, while her Patreon provides additional lessons and opportunities for members who want to support her work more directly. I was also a subscriber to Dianne’s former art subscription packages for approximately two years, so many of the older projects you will eventually find in my journal originated with lessons and materials I received while studying with her. Those projects remain an important part of my own watercolor journey.
The $5 Patreon That Does Much More
I currently support Dianne through her Patreon membership, which begins at just $5. Members receive additional art instruction and access to Patreon activities, and Dianne also selects a member each month to receive an art prize. But there is another reason I think her Patreon is worth supporting. Membership helps Dianne continue doing something that reaches far beyond the internet.
Taking Art Into the Community
Dianne brings art directly to people. She visits care facilities, community centers, and other organizations around the Houston area and beyond, bringing lessons, supplies, and the opportunity to create with her. Some of those classes are offered to participants without charge. Support from her creative community, including Patreon memberships, helps make those programs possible while also helping fund the supplies and prizes she gives through her online communities. So when I support Dianne’s Patreon, I don’t think of it simply as purchasing another online art lesson.
I am helping an artist and teacher continue putting brushes, paint, instruction, and encouragement into people’s hands. That matters to me.

Why I Recommend Her
There are many talented artists who can teach someone how to use watercolor.
What has kept me learning from Dianne is something more difficult to describe.
She is kind.
She is patient.
She is generous with what she knows.
And she has created an environment where people can learn without feeling that they must already be accomplished artists before they are allowed to belong.
Dianne has had a profound impact on my own artwork and creative life, and supporting her work is something I am genuinely happy to do. If you are beginning watercolor, returning to painting after time away, or simply looking for an encouraging creative community, Watercolors Beginners & Beyond is a wonderful place to begin.
